So Trump opened the government back up, at least for now. While I feel for the federal employees that the shutdown has affected, I feel he made a mistake. I don’t think the Democrats will even consider funding the wall, even thought there is a need for it. They have said they have no plans to do so. I think they feel like since it is not causing issues for their states then there is no problem. However, they need to remember this is the United States of America. Key word here is UNITED. Meaning together. If it’s a problem for even one state it is a problem for all.
With this shutdown being the longest in history I feel it would have never made it half as long if a few simple things were to have happened. First of all, if the government is shut down then no government officials should be allowed to leave. Meaning no vacations, holiday get away, trips home ect. They should have been available to negotiate at all times. Secondly, if any government employee is not receiving their pay checks then why on Earth are government officials getting theirs? Take their pay away and have them continue to work without pay. See how long they would work without pay. If you think about it they did absolutely nothing to help negotiate a deal, were they even needed over this past month? Lastly, maybe they should round up all the members of government that feel we don’t need a wall and head on down to the boarder. I don’t mean the areas where there are walls or port of entries; I mean the areas where there are no walls or where there are just wooden fences that can be stepped over. And no, I’m not talking about a few hours, a day, a week or even a month. I’m talking until the government opened back up.
With that said, the house made it clear that they had no plans of giving anything to build a wall. They seemed to be comfortable with that decision. They probably would not care if it lasted months or longer. Think about this, Trump stood up and seen the situation unfolding. People were unable to pay bills, feed their families or even get medical treatment. Airport security was getting second jobs and starting to call off work due to being exhausted. How long before people started getting hurt or worse? He basically took one for the team. Now everyone is saying he backed down. Go figure if he did nothing then they would be talking about how heartless he was.
Something else to think about is the fact he is giving three weeks for something to happen. What is happening over the next three weeks? People will get their back pay and start to get back on their feet. Let’s not forget tax returns. My opinion, set some money aside. This could go down one of two ways people. The government could shut down again or Trump could use his power to force the issue (which is what I feel Democrat want). Guess we will see what happens February 15th.
I read an article awhile back (can’t remember the exact one off the top of my head) that said the average American could not come up with $1,000 in an emergency. Given the past month it seems to be right on. How long do you think people could last before anarchy? Anyway, that’s just my 2 cents.
